Product Description

Zyloprim is a drug generically known as allopurinol. It is used to reduce urate or uric acid formation for conditions that cause an excess. Such conditions may include chronic gout and hyperuricemia. It is also given intravenously to patients undergoing chemotherapy, and it may be used in certain other conditions.

How it Works

Primarily, Zyloprim inhibits the production of uric acid in the blood. This helps in the prevention of kidney stones, damage to kidneys caused by uric acid, and gout. It also helps in the same way for blood disorders that are associated with certain cancers like leukemia and lymphomas.

Uses

As Zyloprim normalizes uric acid production in the body, it is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of kidney problems and gout, as mentioned above. Certain cancers and chemotherapy treatments can also lead to severe acute hyperuricemia, and Zyloprim may be prescribed for such cases. Other uses include improving the condition of people with Crohn’s disease or inflammatory bowel disease when conventional treatments fail, and as an additive drug for refractory epilepsy.

Dosage

Depending on how severe the condition is, a doctor may prescribe a specific amount of Zyloprim to take per day. On average, patients with mild gout may be prescribed 200-300mg a day, while more severe gout may require 400-600mg. Doses higher than 300mg should be administered in equally divided doses. Children with secondary hyperuricemia may be prescribed 150-300mg of Zyloprim daily, depending on age. Generally, this drug is administered via oral capsule, oral tablet, or intravenous solution.

Side Effects

Some possible side effects may be observed, but these are rarely severe. You may experience some milder side effects such as:
