At this moment in time, people from all around the world suffer from spasticity, which is an uncomfortable condition that affects the muscles and the way we interact with the world around us. Luckily, there are a wide variety of drugs meant to stop the symptoms associated with this condition. One of them is Zanaflex, which is based on the active substance known by the name of tizanidine, which is basically a short-term acting muscle relaxer.
To put things better into perspective, the medication works by releasing substances that block nerve impulses, also known as pain sensations from being sent to your brain. In return, this brings in relief and peace-of-mind.
What should patients know prior to taking this medicine?
Before anything else, patients should be aware of the fact that the medication should only be taken for daily activities which make patients require relief from muscle spasticity. During your treatment, avoid taking the medicine if you are also undergoing treatment with any antidepressant such as Luvox or Cipro. Additionally, avoid taking the drug when better muscle tone is needed in order to assure safe movement and balance for various types of activities, as it may endanger your physical safety from time to time.
Prior to taking Zanaflex, it is important to be consulted by your doctor, who will decide whether the pill is fit for you. Based on this, during your consultation, make sure to let your physician know if you suffer from any other health conditions, such as liver disease, high or low blood pressure, long QT syndrome or kidney disease. Additionally, also let your doctor know about your allergies and any other treatments that you may be taking. The medication may be harmful for pregnant women, and may cause harm to the unborn baby. While it is not yet known whether the drug can pass through breast milk, it is recommended that you do not nurse your baby whilst under this treatment.
How should patients go about taking Zanaflex?
Taking Zanaflex should be quite easy, especially if you carefully listen to and follow all directions given by your doctor. With this in mind, avoid taking the drug in larger or lower amounts, for a shorter and longer time than initially prescribed. Your doctor may change doses from time to time, to ensure maximum effectiveness of the medicine, and avoid the appearance of side effects.
The medication should be taken alongside a full glass of water. Do keep in mind that it acts quickly, which is why its effects will be in full swing around 1 to 6 hours after it has been taken. There are cases when you can take up to 3 doses per day, as long as you wait for 6-8 hours in between.
What side effects should patients expect while taking this medicine?
At this moment in time, some of the most common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, numbness, anxiety, fever, dry mouth, sweating, skin rashes, and increased muscle tone or spasm. In case of more severe side effects, call your doctor as soon as possible.
