Product Description

Xeloda is a drug that can treat certain types of cancers such as colorectal and in the breast tissue. Xeloda is listed as an Essential Medicine by the World Health Organization.

How It Works

Xeloda contains an active ingredient called capecitabine, which is an orally administered chemotherapy agent. In the body, capecitabine can be synthesized by enzyme into a substance known as 5-fluorouracil, which treats multiple types of cancer. Capecitabine can interfere with the growth of cancer cells and prevent cancerous cells from spreading to healthy tissue in other parts of the body.

Uses

Xeloda is mainly prescribed to treat breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer and sometimes esophageal cancer. Xeloda can be used solely or as part of a combination therapy to treat these cancers.

Dosage

Dosage of the Xeloda is prescribed by the physician according to the type of cancer being treated, severity, body size, response to treatment, and other factors. Therefore, individual dosages may vary.

Before taking Xeloda, completely read the patient information leaflet provided with the packaging. Follow the dosage instructions in the leaflet in addition to the instructions given by your doctor.

Xeloda pills are taken by the mouth as directed by a physician. Xeloda is usually taken twice a day, once in the morning and the evening. Swallow Xeloda tablets with a full glass of water (about 240 mL).

Xeloda should be taken about 30 minutes after a meal. The tablets are usually taken daily for two weeks, with a one week break. The treatment cycles continue in two week periods in this manner.

Pills must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets. This will cause the full dose to be released in to the body at once, thus increasing the risk for severe side effects.
