Isosorbide mononitrate, also known as Ismo, is a medication used to prevent chest pain (angina) among individuals suffering from various heart conditions. It is important to note that this drug does not treat angina when it occurs. Rather, it is only used to reduce the occurrence of the condition.
How It Works
Ismo belongs to class of medications known as nitrates. As a nitrate vasodilator, this drug works by expanding the size of the blood vessels. By widening the blood vessels in the body, it improves the blood circulation to the heart. Since blood is able to flow more easily, the stress and pressure on the heart is easily eliminated.
The drug is mainly used to prevent angina, also known as chest pain. The medication must only be used to prevent angina that is caused due to heart conditions such as coronary artery disease. You must not use Ismo to treat chest pain that occurs due to extreme physical activities such as exercise or sexual intercourse. Furthermore, Ismo can be used to reduce the symptoms of heart failure when used alongside a number of other medications.
Ismo is usually taken twice a day, by mouth. The first dose must be taken as soon as you wake up and the second dose must be taken 7 hours later. It is highly important to take the medication at the same time every day. So, if you are making any changes to the dose schedule, it is best to speak to your physician first.
In order to experience the best results from this drug, you must consume it regularly. If you missed your dose, take it as soon you remember. Do not take both doses at the same time under any circumstance. Furthermore, it is unwise to stop the treatment without notifying your physician. Stopping the treatment all of a sudden can make your condition worse. Thus, when stopping the treatment, you must gradually decrease the dosage instead of ending the drug consumption abruptly.
When consuming Ismo, make sure to keep an eye out for the following health complications.
Rapid change in heartbeat
Severe skin allergies
Although you might not experience all of the above, it is best to look out for all of them. If you do experience any of these symptoms, inform your physician as soon as possible.
