Description

Danazol is a synthetic steroid that is prescribed to treat certain medical conditions in women such as endometriosis.

How It Works

Danazol is a lab-made steroid that can act as a naturally occurring steroid. Danazol reduces the levels of certain female hormones in the body, which can decrease symptoms of medical conditions like endometriosis. Danazol works in the body employing several complex mechanisms of action. This drug acts like a birth control contraceptive inside the body.

Uses

Danazol is mainly prescribed to treat endometriosis. It is the first drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a disease some women suffer from where tissue that should be inside the uterus (womb) grows outside in the pelvic region or the abdominal areas. Women with endometriosis suffer from extremely painful menstrual cycles and infertility. Danazol can reduce the levels of hormones that can keep endometriosis from getting worse or rendering a women infertile.

Danazol is also prescribed to treat breast aching or tenderness associated with fibrocystic breast disease. Danazol is sometimes given to both men and women to avoid swelling of body parts caused by hereditary angioedema, a congenital disease.

Dosage

There is no set dosage of Danazol as it varies depending on your type of condition and response to treatment. Your doctor will prescribe the right amount of Danazol to treat your condition.

Follow the doctor’s instructions exactly as prescribed when taking this medication. Also read the patient information leaflet provided with the packaging for detailed dosage information.

Danazol tablets should be swallowed once or twice a day as instructed by the prescribing physician. The tablets can be taken with or without food. However, you should choose one method to take the tablet and continue to take the tablet the same manner for each dose. For example, if you are taking Danazol with food, you must take all doses with food.

Stick to the dosage schedule as recommended for the treatment to be effective.

Take your Danazol pills the same time each day. This will help you remember due doses better.
