Carafate is a brand name version of a medication called Sucralfate, which is a form of anti-ulcer medication. This is a medication that’s not easy to absorb into the body by means of the digestive tract. The way it works is it focuses on the lining of the stomach by attaching itself to ulcer sites and protecting them from issues such as acids, enzymes as well as bile salts.
Carafate can be used in order to treat an active duodenal ulcer. It can help repair an active ulcer as well, but it won’t stop future ulcers from happening. There might be additional uses for this medication that aren’t mentioned here.
What are some of the common potential side effects if you decide to use this medicational treatment?
Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach
Mild itching or skin rash
Sleep problems (insomnia)
Dizziness, drowsiness, spinning sensation
Why might one doctor be willing to prescribe you this medication while another will be against the idea for you?
Even though you would think all doctors are the same as far as what they prescribe is concerned, it doesn’t really work this way. The truth is there are certain doctors that work harder than others. Some are willing to learn by trial and error, the smart ones just make sure they don’t do it at the expensive of patients. Then you have some doctors who are masters at research. The research they might use will come from multiple sources.
One doctor might rely on the opinions of other doctors or the results they say they’ve gotten over a large sample size of patients they prescribed a drug to. Then you have other doctors who will only use such information as a means to strengthen their own research and add more credibility to it. Other doctors will be heavily influenced by drug companies who might push for them to focus on specific medications (not a bad thing, but you don’t want a doctor who is too controlled in this way).
What you have to focus on is doing your own research and then presenting a case as to why you believe a medication like Carafate will work better for your condition over another. You have to bring this up in a way that doesn’t come off like your trying to challenge the doctor or trying to get something you don’t need. If you present a good case, then some doctors will be willing to go with that option for your condition over what they were going to prescribe you.
You don’t want to leave all the research up to a doctor. You want to do a little research yourself just to be sure about what you’re going to be using. This goes for whatever drug you might use, not just Carafate. The more you inform yourself, then the more you can be prepared when speaking to a doctor about any concerns you have or voicing your reasons for going with one drug treatment option over another? This is important and it shows how serious you are.
