Product Description

Cabgolin is a brand name for cabergoline, a medication that treats high levels of prolactin in the blood.

How It Works

The active ingredient in Cabgolin, cabergoline, is known as a dopamine promoter. This medication can act on the pituitary gland to limit the production of the hormone prolactin. Cabgolin is an ergot medication, which are drugs derived from the chemicals in the ergot fungi.

Uses

Cabgolin is mainly prescribed to treat a condition known as hyperprolactinaemia, where the prolactin levels in the blood are abnormally elevated.

High levels of prolactin are normal during certain stages of life, such as when a woman is pregnant or during certain cycles of sleep. But certain conditions, such as pituitary tumors or damage to the pituitary gland, can cause prolactin levels in the blood to be higher than healthy.

Hyperprolactinaemia affects both men and women, but it is more common in non-pregnant women.

Hyperprolactinaemia can result in a number of undesirable medical conditions such as abnormal periods, production of breast milk outside of pregnancy, infertility, cessation of ovulation and disruption of the healthy production of certain other hormones. In men, elevated levels of prolactin can lead to production of breast milk, impotence, infertility and decreased sex drive.

Cabgolin can sometimes be prescribed to treat types of pituitary gland tumors, Parkinson’s disease (in combination with other drugs), and uterine fibroids.

Dosage

Cabgolin dosage is prescribed and will vary between patients. The dosage amount will differ based on the prolactin levels in the blood found in a lab test.

Detailed dosage instructions for Cabgolin can be found in the patient information leaflet provided with the packaging.

The recommended dose of Cabgolin for adults is 0.25 mg in tablet form taken twice a week. Dosage may be increased to 1 mg twice a week if necessary.

Cabgolin should be taken by the mouth. This medication can be taken with food.

Because Cabgolin does not follow a daily dosage, it’s recommended to mark a calendar for the days you should take the pill. It’s important to take Cabgolin exactly as prescribed. Make sure you do not forget to take the pills on the days the drug should be taken.

Contact your doctor if you miss a dose of Cabgolin.
