Product Description

Antivert, or meclizine, is a drug called an antihistamine. This means that it reduces or prevents the effects of histamine in the body, which is a natural chemical produced. It is primarily used in the treatment of motion sickness symptoms and for symptoms of vertigo that is caused by inner ear problems.

How it Works

Meclizine, the active ingredient in this drug, has effects that are not fully understood. However, it appears that this drug acts as an antagonist of dopamine and of histamine, two neurotransmitters in the brain. The effects of these mechanisms reduce the stimulation of brain cells involved in producing the symptoms that are targeted.

Uses

The main use of this drug is to treat motion sickness and for managing vertigo that has resulted from vestibular system problems. The active ingredient prevents dizziness, vomiting, and nausea.

Dosage

For motion sickness, the usual recommended dosage is an initial 25-50mg of Antivert. This should be taken one hour before commencing the journey where motion sickness is expected. Every 24 hours of the journey’s duration, the dose may then be repeated.

For vertigo, the normal recommended dosage is 25-100mg per day, but this largely depends on the patient’s response to initial doses.

Ensure that you get a doctor’s advice before self-medicating with Antivert.

Side Effects

There is a chance that you will experience one or several side effects if you take Antivert. These effects, if any, are usually minor and often go away quickly. These include blurred vision, dry mouth, and headache. If these side effects persist, however, you should contact a physician. There may be more severe side effects, so be alert for signs such as:

Precautions

It is important to check whether it is safe to take Antivert, so consult a doctor and discuss risks beforehand. Certain preexisting conditions can mean that it is unsafe to take this medication. In other cases, a particular prescription or recreational drug can have a bad interaction with Antivert when taken.

Inform the medical practitioner if you have liver disease, kidney problems, asthma, enlarged prostate, urination problems, or glaucoma. Be sure to also disclose if you are taking cold or other allergy medicines, sedatives, sleeping pills, narcotic pain drugs, seizure medication, or muscle relaxers. You should also disclose if you are taking drugs for mood and anxiety disorders.

It is still unknown if this medication passes through breast milk, so consult your doctor if you need to breastfeed. It is not expected to cause harm to an unborn child, but still be sure to inform the physician if you are pregnant or plan to be.

Self Care

Always make sure that you follow a doctor’s prescription carefully. Do not take Antivert or meclizine in larger or smaller quantities or for extended periods unless a doctor explicitly tells you to do so. Do not take alcohol with this medication.
